The Importance of an Apprenticeship

HVAC/R technicians are challenged every day with a variety of different tasks that they need to perform under several different conditions. With the level of difficulty associated with these tasks, HVAC/R technicians have to go through a lot of training prior to receiving their certification! A popular way for future HVAC/R technicians to gain their license is through an apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a program that combines on the job training and classroom instruction over a certain period of time. During an apprenticeship, the apprentice is supervised by a journey level trade professional employer. Essentially, the trade professional plays the role of the mentor. By the end of your apprenticeship, you gain your license in the particular trade and become a certified journeyman!

The length of the apprenticeship and the required hours vary by program, location, and employer. Generally, the length of an apprenticeship ranges from 2-5 years. Within these 2-5 years, the apprentice will complete between 2000 and 8000 hours of on the job training, plus time in the classroom. Without a doubt, it is a huge commitment and a lot of work, but in the end it is all worth it!

Here are five reasons why completing an apprenticeship may be the right choice for you:

1.       Obtain your certification!

The main objective of every aspiring HVAC/R technician is to obtain certification to become a licensed technician. A program that combines time in the classroom and on the job training is a fantastic way to prepare future technicians to be the best HVAC/R technicians that they can be!

2.       Network, Network, Network!

No matter what kind of job you have, it is always important to build connections and professional relationships that could potentially help you in the future. An apprenticeship gives the opportunity to build relationships with clients and employers that you may do business with again in the future. It is important that you always represent yourself in the best way possible so that people will want to work with you again!

3.       Real-life, hands on experiences!

As important as it is to learn in a classroom setting, the best way that you are going to learn how to repair a refrigerant leak on an A/C unit is to actually do it yourself! Practically every trade task requires physically using and operating the correct tools to efficiently fix the problem.

4.       Cha-ching!

While you can’t put a price on the experience you get out of an apprenticeship, it sure is a nice bonus to receive some money for all of your hard work! A great benefit about apprenticeships is that most of them are paid. In fact, an apprentice can potentially earn about 40% of a technician’s salary, on average $20,000 per year.

5.       Pave your future career path!

During an apprenticeship, you will spend several years working under the same employer. In many cases, the relationship built between the apprentice and the employer results in the apprentice being hired full-time once they receive their certification. After working together for a long time, the apprentice will feel comfortable in the work environment and will have their dream job! Can’t get much better than that!
