The United States Ice Cream Tour

Literally, when I see a local ice cream stand in a town, I have a hard time driving by. I’ve had some of the most interesting flavors and ice cream specialties at these non-chain establishments. Here are a few favorites of the hilmor Marketing team through our various travels:

Jersey Freeze – 120 Manalapan Ave, Freehold, NJ 07728 (732) 462-3008

I first learned about Jersey Freeze watching a special on the Food Network. Luckily, I have family in the area and a great excuse to visit. Around since 1952, they have a full food menu along with ice cream but they’re known for the soft serve and milkshakes. The secret to their soft serve is the custard style recipe perfected by the founder while working on a dairy farm! There is a secret ingredient in their milkshakes too, but they hold that one very close. You’ll just have to order one to find out!

Dipper Dan’s – 136 W Main St # A, Honeoye Falls, NY 14472 (585) 624-5570

This one goes way back to my days of playing kid’s sports. Whether it was my softball games or my brother’s football games, every win was sweeter with a stop at Dipper Dan’s with the team. Everyone got to pick from the case of various flavors. But a home run on the field earned you one of their famous banana splits! Sharing with teammates was optional! Dipper Dan’s is where I fell in love with mint chocolate chip ice cream on a brownie sundae. Yes please on the cherries!

Lick – 2032 South Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX 78704 (512) 363-5622

As we’ve grown up, our taste in ice cream has also evolved. That’s why we love coming across places like Lick in our travels. With flavors like Dark Chocolate with Olive Oil & Sea Salt or Goat Cheese, Thyme & Honey, you can combine that rare feeling of satisfaction & sophistication!

Mike’s Ice Cream – 208 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37201 (615) 742-MIKE

Located in Downtown Nashville, Mike’s serves both hand-scooped handmade ice cream and soft-serve yogurt. They also have favorite’s like homemade fountain sodas and egg cream! An insider’s trick: Spend the extra 30 cents to have your ice cream soda blended into a “cooler”. Located in the heart of the country music scene, you never know what starts you could run into – just don’t spill your ice cream!

Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream – 2 West Main Street, Mystic, Connecticut 06355 (860) 572-7978

Just over an hour from hilmor’s home office is the very busy and very uniquely located Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream. Serving sandwiches as well as their homemade ice creams this quaint shop is literally located right on the drawbridge in downtown Mystic, CT. Grab a cone of their many unique flavors like Lemon Chocolate Kiss or Sticky Fractured Finger and watch the 1922 bridge open and close every hour.

The Yogurt Mill – 935 Broadway Streety, El Cajon, CA 92021 (619) 579-1566

All of these one of kind ice cream spots can do a number on your waistline, so mix in some frozen yogurt, a healthier treat and a common stop on many hilmor road trips. Like the shops mentioned above, The Yogurt Mill is an independently run store with quite the following. Arrive between 10a-2p to try and avoid the crowds. Enjoy their low-fat and nonfat selections with flavors like Irish Mint Kiss and Pineapple. Don’t forget the toppings – but try to stick with the healthier fruit and nuts!
