HVAC/R as a Skilled Trade

On July 1, 2014, the hilmor 2014 Retool Your Future Scholarship Program will launch for eligible HVAC/R students to enter for a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship towards their HVAC/R schooling.  After the success of the inaugural Retool Your Future Scholarship Program in 2013, we look forward to rewarding the deserving HVAC/R Students.  In addition to a $5,000 scholarship, each of the 6 Grand Prize Winners will receive a trip to the 2015 AHR Expo in Chicago, IL and a HVAC/R Starter Kit complete with tools to help students get started in the industry.  Plus, their teacher with receive a hilmor Green Wall merchandising display for their classroom to allow their students to utilize hilmor tools in the classroom.  Students are able to enter by submitting a 250-word essay on how the HVAC/R industry will “retool their life”.  Submissions are accepted on between July 1, 2014 and September 30, 2014.

hilmor created this scholarship contest as a way to encourage people to pursue a career in the HVAC/R industry.  Despite the fact that jobs in the HVAC/R industry are expected to grow, the industry is challenged to find skilled workers to fill these jobs.  In fact, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 21 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Candidates familiar with computers and electronics and those with good troubleshooting skills will have the best job opportunities as employers continue to have difficulty finding qualified technicians to work on complex new systems.”

Programs can vary between six months and two years. Specific certifications and requirements will vary by state and local municipality, so it’s best to check with local companies in your area on their requirements for new-hires.  And, all technicians are required to pass an EPA test to handle refrigerants.

Let’s face it, HVAC/R technicians face some tough obstacles every day- boiling hot temperatures, freezing cold temperatures, cramped spaces, and the list goes on- but, the job also has some advantages for those who would prefer not to sit behind a desk every day.   A job of an HVAC/R technician provides the opportunities to be a problem solver, use your hands, face a new challenge each day and have a sense of accomplishment once the job is complete.  Plus, it’s a career where there will always be a need.  That’s comforting, right?
