A Day in the Life of an HVAC/R Tech

No two days are the same for an HVAC/R Technician, but from what we’ve seen, they encounter some more than uncomfortable environments day-in and day-out.  They keep their cool, even when their customers have been without theirs for 27 hours.

What you see isn’t always what you get.  HVAC/R Techs don’t just clean off the condensing unit in a backyard and change air filters.  Let’s take a look at what a typical day in the life of an HVAC/R Tech may be like.

Rise and shine.  You wake up at 5:00 a.m., and it’s already 80° outside. It is going to be hot in those attics.

You are five minutes away from your first job when your Service Manager calls to reroute you to an emergency job all the way across town. Quick electrical diagnosis shows the issue to be a bad capacitor preventing the unit from cooling the house.  Quick swap-out and on to the next call.  Feeling like a Superhero yet?

Walking into the next job, you’re tripping over children’s toys and a very excitable dog.  Sounds like an issue with the air handler, and of course there is no ladder up to the attic.  Down two flights of stairs to the truck and all the way back up.  Fan motor is bad, and the local supply houses don’t have it in stock.  Homeowner is not happy, but you save the day by finding it at a supply house outside of town and letting them know that you’ll be back the following day.

First job after lunch brings you to a bad compressor.  Local supply house has one, and the job needs to get done today.  After recovery, compressor change, evacuation, and charging, the system is running again – and it’s already 7:00 p.m.  Dinner time and family time is important before you need to wake up the next day and do it all over again.

HVAC/R Techs know how important a comfortable living environment is for people where they work, live and play.  They are the down-and-dirty version of a modern day Clark Kent.  Can you handle the pressure of being an HVAC/R Tech?
